Awesome stuff by awesome people!!!
Today is a day metal fans can rejoice! Finally, after two successful campaigns and months of somewhat impatience, Banger Films has finally released Episode 12 of the Metal Evolution series: Extreme Metal.

Overview

The episode starts at France's Hellfest with Sam Dunn introducing the episode. From there, we delve into the question(s) "What is Extreme Metal?" and "Why are people so devoted to this dark from a music as what the average sheltered suburbia would just consider noise?"

The episode is divided into five categories:
The Origins of Extreme Metal
Grindcore
Death Metal
Black Metal
The Future of the Genre

The Origins of Extreme Metal

The first band discussed was Newcastle's Venom, and Sam meets up with ex-guitarist Mantas and he explains as to where the idea for creation such music that only meant to scare people, rather than focusing on actual musical abilities.

Shifting gears to Switzerland, Sam then met up with the legendary Tom G. Warrior and shares his experiences in the formation of his two previous bands, the radical Hellhammer and the atmospheric Celtic Frost. Tom explains that rather than wanting to "shock" people, he wanted to create a band that expressed art in the most dark ways.

Grindcore

In Birmingham, the birthplace of Heavy Metal, Sam meets up with Shane Embury, the bassist of Napalm Death. Here Sam looks into the ultra lightning subgenre known as Grindcore and how many of these bands wanted to sound like Metallica, Slayer, Venom and Celtic Frost, but a thousand times faster and the introduction of the Blast Beat. These are the types of bands that considered gods like Dio, Scorpions, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to be pop music!!

In Liverpool, Sam meets up with Jeff Walker and Bill Steer of Melodic Death Metal pioneers Carcass and the two explain their controversial early album covers that they felt like they didn't want to "shock" people, it was more or less to "disturb" them. Later they explain the concept of the iconic 1993 album "Heartwork" and how this album spelled the end Grindcore as a legit metal movement.

Death Metal

You would think that Florida would nothing but sunshine, beaches and Mickey Mouse right? Well, you'd be "dead" wrong (Bad pun I know)!!

Sam arrives at the legendary Morrisound Studios in Tampa and meets with ex-Death/ex-Six Feet Under/Massacre bassist, Terry Butler, and he explains the impact of Chuck Schuldiner and how he got the scene started.

Next, Sam meets with producer Scott Burns, the man responsible for harnessing the death metal sound and making a legitimate musical style.

Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse shares his experiences in Tampa and how the band became the top Death Metal band in the world thanks to the "free advertising" from Bob Dole and their cameo in Ace Ventura

Black Metal

Returning to Norway, Sam avoids the massive controversy of Black Metal (church burnings, murder, etc etc) and instead focusing on the music itself.

Meeting with Fenriz of Darkthrone, Necrobutcher of Mayhem, and Silenoz of Dimmu Borgir, these individuals explain that the genre was started as a reaction to the over technical bands in Death and Thrash metal, returning to a more raw, basic, and low-fi form of music. Silenoz explains that he and the rest of Dimmu Borgir felt restricted with these "rules" and burst through with their inclusions of keyboards and full on orchestras, creating a more atmosphere type of Black Metal, or "un-Trve" Metal

Dani Filth of England's Cradle of Filth puts his own spin on the matter.

The Future of the Genre

In New York, Sam meets up with Norway's Enslaved, and they explain as to how they broke free of their Black Metal roots to a Progressive entity.

Meeting with Gojira, they explain that Extreme Metal can serve as a way to get their message of environmental awareness across.

Sam wraps up the episode saying that Extreme Metal keeps the underground spirit of Heavy Metal alive and may just be the most important subgere in Metal's history.

Final Thoughts

All and all, I'd give this episode a 10/10. Absolutely perfect episode and continuation of the series. Notice I said continuation. Sam gives a small speech at the end of the episode saying that he encourages fans to "demand" episodes for genres that haven't been covered yet.

Can anyone say Doom Metal?!!

Hello, deviantArt!. The name's Derek, your average railroad enthusiast/metalhead from West Florida (as of 7/2/12 Kansas City) (And no way in hell am I a foamer!). I have been obsessed with trains since I was about 3 and it has grown from a hobby to working a for a life long career (that's right, working for my degree to become an locomotive engineer!). My obseesion with heavy metal began when I was about 15 and somedays just can't go five minutes without a screeching guitar solo blasting through my speakers.

I'm not really much of an artist, I'm okay but not great. I usually draw trains or guitars, but lately I've been practicing/drawing some of my favorite cartoons I used to watch as a kid, such as Hey Arnold!, Danny Phantom, Rugrats/All Grown Up, etc, etc. and I'm getting better at it (still need to work on hands though, I always seem to fail on those XD ). Anyway feel free to browse around, comment and favorite.

Also, I may not be the greatest artist out there. This is just a hobby for me during my spare time. But, if you have any criticism to give, whether it be positive or negative, I welcome it. If you like it, you like it. If you think it's complete shit, tell me why to see what I can do to fix/touch up/improve on.
